Greek Gallery of Gatchina Palace #260744534
Description
Greek Gallery ââ¬â appeared during the reconstruction of the palace in 1796-1797 on the site of an open gallery. It connected the rooms located in the mezzanine of the main building of the palace with the Arsenal Square. The decoration of the gallery was made according to the drawings of the architect V. Brenna in the 1790s. The European society of the late XVIII century was characterized by a fascination with antiquity. This can be explained by the use of reliefs depicting scenes of ancient life in the design of the gallery.Four paintings by the famous French painter Hubert Robert and numerous sculptures were placed in the Greek Gallery.
