Description

A colony of bagged cosniel (Icerya purchasi) adults with ovisac on of African coral tree (Erythrina lysistemon) at Dilberler Park in Seyhan district of Adana province in Turkey. Cottony cushion scale (Icerya purchasi) is a scale bug that feeds on more than 80 families of woody plants, most notably on citrus and pittosporum. The bagged cosniel (Icerya purchasi) is thought to have originated in Australia. It was brought to California by chance in 1868, and it caused heavy damage to the citrus industry there until its natural enemy was brought from Australia in 1888. This application is the first example of successful classical biological control applications. Bagged cosnille later spread to most of the tropical and subtropical countries of the world. In addition, although it can be seen periodically in greenhouses in temperate regions, it is not generally harmful in greenhouse conditions.
