He was an American historian, author, professor and scholar. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 and honored as one of the 100 Greatest African Americans in 2002. The Pathway to Hope created a walking route between John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park and other sites in the core of the Greenwood District. The Pathway to Hope was among several projects to mark the 100th anniversary of the Black Wall Street massacre in Tulsa in 1921.
