Greenwood Chamber of Commerce `Black Wall Street Forever` mural in the historic Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma. #264221350
Description
Pictured is the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce `Black Wall Street Forever` mural in the historic Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Tulsa race riot or Black Wall Street massacre took place May 21 - June 1, 1921 after 19-year-old black shoeshiner, Dick Rowland, was falsely accused of attacking and raping a 17-year old white female elevator operator. White attackers burned and destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the neighborhood which was at the time one of the wealthiest black communities in the United States, colloquially known as Black Wall Street. Many were injured or killed in what has been since considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in the history of the United States.
