Description
This is a Calliphoridae family fly, commonly known as blow flies, blow-flies, carrion flies, bluebottles, greenbottles, or cluster flies. Calliphoridae adults are commonly shiny with metallic colouring, often with blue, green, or black thoraces and abdomens. About 1,900 species of blow flies are known, with 120 species in the Neotropics. These scavenger insects lay their eggs on dead animals. The larvae feed on decaying tissue of animals. They are efficient disease vectors of dysentery. Observed near Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR), Petén, Guatemala.
