Description
This close-up picture of an American Bald Eagle clearly shows how the bird is protecting one eye vulnerable to the direction of the rain droplets. It has done this by sheilding the eye with its nictitating membrane which is essentially a third eyelid. Although the membrane is partially transparent (and the full size picture clearly shows the blood vessels within it) here the other eye remains open
