Although Hubert Bancroft was actually from Ohio, he was working for his brother in law in his bookstore in Buffalo New York when word came out about the San Francisco Gold Rush.Although Hubert did become a successful book seller when he arrived in San Francisco, he then started publishing books, and then collecting books of historic interest, primarily of the American West.Hubert ultimately gave up the book business to his brother altogether for the collecting of books, enmeshing thousand of books, which was sold to the University of California Berkeley.
