Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which was opened to the public on 14 May 1894. When it opened, Blackpool Tower was the tallest man made structure in the British Empire. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 518 feet 158 metres tall. Central pier was completed in 1868. The Ferris wheel was erected on the pier in 1990. Blackpool has a marine frontage of about 11.25 kilometres, all of which is protected from erosion by the sea wall, which needs constant maintenance.Under the Coastal Protection Act the Council must ensure the stability of the sea walls and ensure their continuing maintenance, for which a detailed Coast Protection Strategy was adopted by the council in 1995.
