Description
The national necropolis of Vassieux-en-Vercors is a military cemetery of the Resistance at the entrance of the village of Vassieux. It was created in 1948 and contains 187 individual graves with cement crosses painted white:those of 86 resistance members of the FFI, see below ;those of 52 inhabitants of Vassieux;those of 49 unknown persons.The Battle of Vercors in July and August 1944 was between a rural group of the French Forces of the Interior FFI [maquis] and the armed forces of Nazi Germany which had occupied France since 1940
