Description
On June 20, 1540, João de Almeida Torto, a nurse at the Hospital de Santo António de Viseu, a master barber with a bleeder`s license, an astrologer and a teacher of first letters, made one of the first documented attempts to fly in Portugal.Equipped with `triple-soled shoes with spaces between them to attenuate the fall`, and `a cap in the shape of a bird`s head with an enormous and open beak`, he jumped at 5 am that day from one of the towers of the Cathedral of Viseu with its `witchcraft wings` made of `strong and double cloth`, maneuvered by its arms Father Henrique Cid, Ephemérides.
