Description
Then Vice President Walter `Fritz` Mondale points in the direction of local political dignitaries including mayor Jane Byrne and Cook County Democratic Chairman George Dunne at a Democratic Party rally in Chicago, Illinois in 1980 to boost support for re-election of the Jimmy Carter-Walter Mondale ticket in the upcoming presidential election of 1980. Mondale, a 2-term liberal Democrat was a transformative VP under Carter from 1977-1981. He greatly expanded the role, power, and significance of the office. The forward-looking Minnesotan helped push forth legislation on civil rights, aid to schools, environment, consumer affairs and measures lifting up the poor. He died at his home in Minneapolis on April 19, 2021 at the age of 93. Interestingly, Dunne also lived to 93, dying in 2006. Byrne died in 2014, aged 80.
