Detail of Cistern Square in San Gimignano in Tuscany, Italy #268005161
Description
The town of San Gimignano delle belle Torri is located in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. It was an important relay point for pilgrims going to Rome or returning from it by the Via Francigena. The noble families who controlled the city had built some 72 tower houses up to 50 m high, symbols of their wealth and power. Only 14 of these towers remain but San Gimignano has retained its feudal atmosphere and appearance. The city also conceals masterpieces of Italian art from the 14th and 15th centuries.
