If your shadow is on your left, then the sun is on your right. As the sun comes up in the morning, you would have to be facing North to have the sun on your right. More or less, that is. If you are on the equator, the sun always rises almost exactly in the east all year long. At the spring and fall equinox, this is also true all over the world. But as you get closer to the winter solstice, in the Northern hemisphere, the sun rises further to the South, is above the horizon for less time, and sets further to the South, with each passing day.
