The temple of Hadrian in Ephesus #268133818
Description
The temple of Hadrian, while not large or richly decorated, still belongs to the masterpieces of ancient architecture. It was built in 118 A.D. by wealthy citizens of the city in honor of Hadrian, Artemis and the city as a whole. Statues once stood in front of its monumental entrance. Today only pedestals remain of them, but it can be determined from the inscriptions that they depicted Hadrian's followers, who, incidentally, were not so prominent: Diocletian (284-305), Maximian (285-305), Constantius (293-306), Galerius (293-311).
