Stage, screen, and television actors Phyllis Frelich and John Rubinstein take their bows at the close of a performance of their play on Broadway, 'Children of a Lesser God, on August 30, 1980. She was the first deaf actor or actress to win a Tony Award. Six years later, Marlee Matlin won an Oscar in the same role in the film adaptation of the play. For his part, Rubinstein won a Tony as well, opposite her. Frelich died on April 10, 2014, in Temple City, Arizona, at the age of 70.
