Gothic church along river Arno in Italian Pisa #26998003
Description
The Church of Santa Maria della Spina, in english St. Mary of the Thorn, is situated on the south bank of the river Arno. In the past it was even closer to the river but it was moved to its current position in 1871 due to fears of flooding. The church is the finest example of Gothic architecture in the Italian town of Pisa. Spina refers to a thorn from Christs crown that was acquired by the merchant who rebuilt the church in 1323. The picture is taken from the Ponte Solferino; at the end the Ponte di Mezzo.
