The Question Mark butterfly has a wingspan of 1.5 to 2.75 inches. Its upperwings are orange to reddish-brown, with a black border dotted with rather small white spots and a single row of submarginal white spots. The underside of the wings have silver crescents and black markings. The hindwing has a number of distinctive silver spots and patches, with a more muted pattern near the margins. The center of the butterfly has an orange red comma-shaped marking that looks something like a question mark.
