Description

The Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas) is a large moth native to Southeast Asia, India, and Australia. It is considered to be one of the largest species of moths in the world with a wingspan of up to 30 cm (12 in). It has a unique pattern of eyespots on its wings resembling the eyes of an owl, which is thought to help ward off predators. The Atlas Moth is characterized by its distinctive fringed hindwings, which resemble the claws of its namesake – the Greek titan Atlas. Its caterpillars are one of the primary host food plants of the Moonbeam butterfly, a spectacular species that is increasingly threatened due to habitat destruction.
