The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly is an iconic butterfly species found in the tropical rainforests of the northern and eastern parts of Australia. It is the largest butterfly found in Australia and is characterized by its velvet black wings, yellow-green edge, and bright yellow and green markings on the upper wings. The caterpillars of this species feed on plants in the family Aristolochiaceae and it is the only species from the genus Ornithoptera encountered in Australia. The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly is listed as near threatened species due to habitat loss and destruction. Conservation efforts are being taken to help protect the species and its habitat.
