Description
One of the top attractions in Abhaneri, Rajasthan, India is Chand Baori, the oldest and largest step well in India. The step well is a massive 13 stories deep and consists of 3500 narrow steps that lead to the water at the bottom. This stepwell is famous for its classical geometrical design and architecture. The step well also features several small temples and shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities. This cool place of retreat was built in the 9th century AD by King Raja Chand of the Nikumbh dynasty. It was an important source of water for the local population and also served as a place of community gathering. Chand Baori has been featured in several movies, including The Fall and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
