A humpback whale is a large, migratory cetacean of the suborder Mysticeti. They have a distinctive hump on their backs, long flippers, and a unique series of vocalizations known as "songs". These majestic creatures can grow up to 52 feet long and typically weigh up to 40 tons. They feed primarily on small schooling fish like herring, mackerel, and anchovies. Humpback whales can be found in all of the world's major oceans, often traveling hundreds of miles to find their food or breeding grounds. They are listed as a species of "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List, though their population numbers have reduced substantially due to whaling and bycatch.
