St. Joseph's Church St. Joseph's Arts Society San Francisco 6 #271570982
Description
St. Joseph's Catholic Church has a history going back to 1861 and Joseph Alemany, the first Archbishop of California. Although the current church was built in 1913,the original church and school were built in 1906. That part became the parish hall. Originally a very Irish neighborhood,by 1979 it became a Filipino area, turning St. Joseph's into the largest Filipino parish in the whole country. When the Loma Prieta quake struck San Francisco in 1979,the church sustained so much damage,it was unable to handle the costly repairs and was forced to close entirely. After sitting completely abandoned for many years,it was finally bought by famous interior designer Ken Fulk, who after spending a great deal of time, and money, reopened it in 2018 as the St. Joseph's Arts Society,to celebrate the arts and culture from not just San Francisco but the entire Bay Area and indeed the entire world. As seen 1 February 2023.
