It is popularly called the Zócalo and is considered the center of Mexican national identity. The square is located in the heart of the area known as the Historic Center of Mexico City. Its location was chosen by the Spanish conquerors because the area was exactly above the remains of the political and religious center of Tenochtitlán which was the capital of the Aztec empire.
