Coffee houses tend to be just that,a coffee house where you go to get a cup of coffee and maybe a light bite to eat. But by the late 1950's,things were beginning to change around the North Beach section of San Francisco. Because North Beach has always been the Italian neighborhood,it has always had caffe's,but with the arrival of the Beatnique Generation,their coffee shops started to open with a stage,for a folk singer. One of these was Coffee and Confusion,1962 to 1969. Janis Joplin,newly arrived in the city only the day before,was brought here immediately,and after mounting the stage to sing,the crowd did something for the very first time,pass around a hat and collected $14.00 for her,the equivalent of $137.00 today.
