Beat Museum North Beach San Francisco 2 #272309190
Description
The Beatnik Movement started in 1948 at Columbia University where Allen Ginsburg,Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs were all students together, and met for the first time. This was an intellectual movement that was concerned with the rising consumerism and capitalism and conformities of the period. It also coincided with the San Francisco Renaissance that was growing in the North Beach neighborhood, initially a group of writers but later included all media of the arts. The two sort of melded together. They also influenced the Hippie movement, which overlapped with them, who were also rebelling against consumerism and conformities, but were less intellectual. The idea for the museum started in 2003,down in Monterey California, using an RV that could be driven cross country to bring the message to the people directly. The museum, which houses many original manuscripts and personal effects from these people, opened in 2006. As seen 15 February 2023.
