The city of San Francisco is named for the Catholic priest and saint,Francis of Assisi. The North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco has a very grand and well known church of Sts. Peter and Paul,but what is less well known,and only a few short blocks away,is the church of St Francis of Assisi. As with many churches of all kinds,attendance was dropping,and when the Loma Prieta Earthquake hit in 1989,there was talk of closing it down altogether. It was saved instead,and is now the National Shrine of St Francis of Assisi,which also contains a relic of St Francis himself. As witnessed 22 March 2023.
