The Second Temple, formerly located in Jerusalem, was built after the destruction of the First Temple. In 586 BC, the Jews were taken captive to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar II of the New Babylonian Kingdom, where they became prisoners of Babylon and the First Temple was destroyed. After New Babylon was destroyed by Cyrus II of the Persian Empire, Cyrus II released the Jews and allowed them to rebuild the temple. The Jews who returned to their homeland began to rebuild the temple, but the rebuilding process was not smooth, and it was not completed until the time of Darius.
