Shotwells San Francisco 2 #274446950
Description
Shotwells has a history in San Francisco going back to 1891 when Mr. Schlichtmann and Bredhofy rented this business from a Mrs. Grother, opening a grocery saloon,a common feature of many German immigrants to the area for the time period. Shortly after,Schlichtmann bought out his partner, and moved his family upstairs. With the 1906 Earthquake and Fire that caused so much damage to the city,in an effort to keep children safe,a new law was passed, prohibiting combined grocery stores and bars, and Mr. Schlichtmann was one of the very few who were able to get this new license. Because of this,he removed the grocery store altogether and expanded the bar. By 1909,the bar was sold again,to a Mich Cribbin, who was owner during Prohibition,1920 - 1933. During this period,he converted the bar back to a grocery store, fortunately keeping the unique wooden bar in the back. After repeal,it was again returned to a full bar,but after Cribbin died in 1976,another San Francisco businessman bought it from Cribbins sister,in 1982. Then,in 2000 it was sold again, the time to a couple of bar tenders from a North Beach bar, renaming it Shotwells in 2006 to honor its' long history. As seen 23 March 2023.
