This aerial view of Cagliari, the capital and largest city of the island region of Sardinia, which is part of Italy. The island has 1.64 million residents (as of 2019) and about 550,000 live in Cagliari on the southern tip of the 170-mile long island which is 90 miles wide. It is also known as Sardegna, by the locals, and is situated about 125 west of the nearest point of the Italian mainland and is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea, a branch of the Mediterranean Sea. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, exceeded only by Sicily. At over 9,000 square miles it is a tad larger than the US state of Vermont.
