An oil beetle, Meloe sp., in the family Melodiae the members of which are commonly known as the blister beetles. These insects get their common names from their ability to cause skin blisters. When handled or otherwise threatened they release oily droplets of bright orange liquid that contains the poison cantharadin. This one crosses a sidewalk in daylight casting shadows of antennae.
