Wildlife Series - Double-crested Cormorant - Nannopterum auritum #276706971
Description
A cormorant swimming on Lake Murray in San Diego California. Cormorants are expert divers. They speed along underwater via their webbed feet, using their wings as rudders. Some colonies of cormorants have been observed herding fish for more efficient hunting. After fishing, cormorants go ashore, and are frequently seen holding their wings out in the sun. All cormorants have preen gland secretions that are used ostensibly to keep the feathers waterproof. HTBphotos by John and Katharina Notarianni for websites, print and other published media.
