With moist conditions the sperm swim into the archegonia and fertilize the egg--this fertilized egg develops into a sporophyte that produces asexual spores that can produce new liverwort plants. This is alternation of generations--the gametophyte & x28;gamete producing plants& x29; alternating with a sporophyte & x28;spore producing plant& x29;.
