Saint Peter's city gate on the southern side of Lucca in Italy. #277828857
Description
Pictured is Saint Peter's city gate on the southern side of Lucca in Italy. It was designed by Alessandro Resta between 1565 and 1566. There are three entrances in the gate, one in the center and one on each side of the center. In the center is a shield with coat of arms of Saint Peter and the word Libertas on a plaque. On the sides are two lions inserted in the ancient openings through which chains that operated an ancient drawbridge flowed. The side doors are used for pedestrian transit, while the central opening is the road for car traffic.
