Etruscan tomb on the Hill of Calvary, Montecalvario, near Castellina in Chianti, Italy. #277829086
Description
Pictured is an Etruscan tomb on the Hill of Calvary, Monteccalvario, near Castellina in Chianti, Italy. The Hill of Calvary is a small round hill with a diameter of more than 50 meters. At the beginning of the 19th century an accidental discovery revealed that the mound was a funerary Etruscan monument and that beneath it lay four chamber tombs arranged according to the cardinal points. In each tomb there is a long corridor that leads to a hall, from which access can be gained to one or more rooms. The deceased were members of wealthy families during the Orientalizing period from the end of the 7th century to the beginning of the 6th century B.C., Before Christ. The entrance to the long corridor of one of the four tombs is seen in this photograph. Some funerary items are on display at the Archeological Museum of Sienese Chianti in the Rocca Castle in Castellina in Chianti.
