The column of Saint Zanobi in the Pizza del Duomo in Florence, Italy. #277829515
Description
Pictured is the column of of Saint Zanobi in the Pizza del Duomo in Florence, Italy. The stone column topped with a Christian cross marks the spot where a miracle is reputed to have taken place in the year 429 CE. According to ancient legend when the coffin holding the body of Saint Zanobi brushed against the leafless winter branches of an elm tree, the tree is said to have burst into full bloom. Hence the bronze relief on the column represents the tree in full leaf. Above it, the now fairly indecipherable Gothic script recounts the wondrous story. Florentines celebrate the miracle every year on January 27th by decorating the base of the column with flowers and greenery.
