Pictured are carved wooden reliefs of Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi in the tympanum of the exit portal on the left side of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi. Saint Francis was an Italian mystic and Catholic friar who founded the Franciscans. Saint Clare , inspired by the teachings of Saint Francis, founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition.
