Fortress of Buarcos - Figueira da Foz - Portugal #279631925
Description
It is believed that its construction began in the reign of João I of Portugal (1385-1433), or more precisely in that of Manuel I of Portugal (1495-1521), as a defense against attacks by English and Dutch corsairs, as well as as Barbary pirates, frequent in the region.Of the old fortification, only a small section of its walls currently survives, between two bastions, parallel to the Buarcos beachfront.
