Pictured is a plaque for a Gold Medal of Civil Merit awarded to the municipality of Assisi by the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Ciampi was president from 1999 to 2006. The award was for actions by the municipality of Assisi during the last World War which avoided the destruction of an invaluable artistic heritage, allowed the salvation of numerous political Jewish refugees and other displaced persons, as well as the care of thousands of wounded of all nationalities who were hospitalized in the city health facilities. It was a splendid example of love for the world. The plaque is on an outside wall of the Priory Palace.
