A Victim Of Khmer Rouge Mines In Cambodia Editorial Photo

The Khmer (Red) Rouge was a fanatic organization formed in 1968 by the Communist Party of Kampuchea in Cambodia. It was the ruling party from 1975 to 1979, led by Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Son Sen, and Khieu Samphan. The main policy of communists in Cambodia was social engineering, which resulted in genocide and famine. In 1979, the Khmer Rouge had fled Cambodia and established guerrilla groups in Cambodian jungle, fighting against the new government of the Peoples Republic of Kampuchea(now the Kingdom of Cambodia). Khmer Rouge guerrillas established vast mine fields to protect themselves against attack. Many Cambodian people (especially children) have been injured or died from mines since then. Here, a victim of mines who lost his leg walks along an old and abandon railway in Battambang, one of the largest cities in Cambodia. The railway system was built by French during colonial times and since then it has collapsed. The area of old train stations and railway roads are now occupied by the poorest part of Cambodian community.
