Hanuman langurs and monkeys are herbivorous and eat mainly feed fruits and plant materials. But some species are found to consume soil. This is known as geophagy. It is believed that this soil eating provides them some dietary nutrients, particularly trace minerals. It is also believed that this geophagy is linked to pregnancy and lactation in female langurs.
