Description

Pictured is a fresco depicting the Pentecost on the eastern wall of the Contrari Chapel in the Fortress of Vignola in Modena, Italy. The Holy Spirit descends on Mary and the apostles in the form of a dove and strikes each of them in the guise of a tongue of fire, enabling them to speak all the languages of the world. The metaphor marks the beginning of the preaching of Jesus’ message to all nations. The frescos in the chapel were completed by the Master of Vignola, circa 1432.
