Artistic Passageway arch in the Fortress of Vignola near Modena, Italy #284631262
Description
Pictured is an artistic passageway arch in the Fortress of Vignola near Modena, Italy. The fortress was perhaps built in the Carolingian ers from 800 to 888 but known from 1178. It was turned into a patrician residence by the Contrari family in the Renaissance era. The fief was ceded to Jacopo Boncompagni in 1577 after the Contrari Family died out. After several additional changes in ownership over the years, it was sold to the current owner in 1998, the Foundation of Vignola. The brick arch has a full relief featuring standing eagles with half-raised wings, a component of both the Este and Contrari family coats of arms.
