Description

The Elizabeth Arden Building, formerly the Aeolian Building, at 689 Fifth Avenue, was built from 1925-1927 by Warren & Wetmore for the Gould Realty Co. Until 1938, the 14-story French Renaissance style building was leased as the headquarters of the Aeolian Company, a leading manufacturer of pianos and roll-operated instruments, who maintained a 150-seat recital hall on the second floor. Following Aelion's departure, the building served as the flagship salon for Elizabeth Arden, who is still a tenant. It set a new retail leasing record in 1970 when Gucci agreed to pay $100 per square foot for retail space in the corner store. The former Aeolian Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2002.
