n the mid 1930`s,when Valetta moved to San Francisco`s Telegraph Hill with her husband Desmond Heslet and her mother,Grace,they found the remains of an old quarry and a slum,sand and mud,and a very beautiful view of the bay. They quickly bought a house,obtained permission from the city to do the planting all along the hillside,and had all kinds of artists move in or visit regularly.
