The Castle of Barletta. Puglia. Italy. #285272444
Description
The Castle of Barletta was built by the Normans around the 11th century and its construction ended in the 17th century. The Castle of Barletta was conceived to act as a prison-fortress against enemies, since it was surrounded by the sea which at that time reached up to the current moat, but with the election of Frederick II of Swabia to the throne, the castle was used as a private residence, as demonstrated by the windows of the structure that overlook the courtyard. The entire complex is built with light limestone, cut into perfectly square and ashlar blocks, which come from quarries in the area.
