Pictured is a mosaic in the central dome of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, Italy. The Crux sancta et invicta is in the center of the dome, surrounded by numerous stars. In the pendetives there are symbols of the Evangelists leaving to spread the gospel to the world. Saint Mark is represented by a winged lion, Saint Luke by a winged ox, Saint Matthew by a man, and Saint John by an eagle. The mausoleum was commissioned in the first half of the 5th century AD by empress Galla Placidia. Beautiful mosaics fill every part of the interior. It is a UNESCO World Heritage monument since 1996.
