Wooden statue of Saint Anthony of Padua in the Church of Saint George in Varenna, Italy. #286256422
Description
Pictured is a wooden statue of Saint Anthony of Padua in the Church of Saint George in Varenna on Lake Como. He is carrying the Christ child and holding a book and lilies, as he is often pictured. The inscription on the surrounding wood refers to the story of Saint Anthony's bread with the words Bread for the Poor written on a panel. Many people give donations to help the poor in thanksgiving for a child's life being miraculously restored when a mother promised Saint Anthony she would give the child's weight in grain to the poor so they could make bread if Saint Anthony would intercede and bring her beloved drowned child back to life, which he did.
