Black willow (Salix nigra) is native to North America and grows along rivers, lakes, and floodplains. The bark is dark brown to black and deeply furrowed. Willow bark contains salicin from which the original aspirin was derived. The tree is not recommended for use in residential landscapes due to its susceptibility to breakage and potential insect disease problems.
