Description
Lake Belis-Fantanele is an artificial reservoir in the Gilau Mountains, Cluj county. It was developed in the period 1970-1974 for hydropower purposes, on the course of the Somesul Cald river. It has an area of 9.8 km2 and a length of 13 km, being located at an altitude of 990 m. On the shore of the lake is the Belis-Fantanele tourist resort. The lake is located in the west of Cluj county, in the northern part of the Apuseni mountains, at the confluence of the Gilau mountains (east), Vladeasa mountains (west) and Muntele Mare (south). In the period 1970-1974, the inhabitants of the old municipality of Belis had to move to the current location of the village. In very dry summers, when the water level of the lake drops a lot, you can see the ruins of the houses abandoned by the people, the most famous being the ruins of the former church in Giurcuta de Jos.
