Statue of the Independence War, Budapest #290496239
Description
The war memorial is about 300m south of the Fisherman's Bastion. The bronze is by Zala György (1893), celebrating the freedom fighters in Hungarian War of Independence. Buda Castle was assaulted and captured in May 1849, after fierce fighting. The statue stands in a small park, and is dedicated to anonymous heroes of the castle siege. A soldier stands beside a broken cannon, waving a banner (reading "Freedom or Death."), while winged victory holds an olive crown above. Bronze leaves and palm branches adorn the statue's plinth. The statue is accessible at all times with no entry fee.
